I. CONCEPT

The music video for Moondough’s “Social Disco Dancing” was shot and edited by Ken Mundo himself. He came to me as a fan of the animations I’d uploaded to instagram with a music video fully shot and edited, and he asked me if I could add animations to sort of fill in the blanks so to speak.

II. EXECUTION

For this project, I started by marking the timeline during accented parts of music. I wanted the animations to flow rhythmically with the song so I made sure I was animating mostly to kicks and snare hits. The animations themselves were hand-drawn frame by frame in Adobe After Effects with a Wacom tablet. I stuck with the same palette of cyan, magenta, and yellow throughout the whole video, and I stacked a few glow effects onto each other for a bit of a neon feel.

III. EPILOGUE

Growing up in the nineties, I’ve been conditioned to appreciate the imperfections between frames in hand-drawn animations. I could have made this music video in a shorter amount of time by keyframing shapes, and the animations would have been a lot smoother, but I didn’t want them to be smoother. I really like the jagged and bouncy edges that are natural in this process, and I’m glad Ken felt the same way!
